Dept. of Ed releases guidance on HEOA textbooks provisions

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Education released guidance to help textbook publishers and colleges understand and comply with the textbook affordability laws going into effect July 1.  We applaud the Dept. for making this effort to ensure the new requirements are implemented effectively and immediately.

The new laws were passed by Congress in 2008 as part of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA), which was a huge step toward making the textbooks market more fair to students.  The laws will require textbook publishers to disclose important price information to professors (believe it or not, they usually don't!) and to offer all textbook unbundled.  It also asks collbes to inform students which books are required for their courses during registration, so they have plenty of time to shop around.  Click here for more information, or download our fact sheet on the textbooks provisions in HEOA.
