Student Debt Alert - In Action

Check out all of the Student PIRGs work throughout the last three years to alleviate the burden of student loan debt.

October 2005:
Student PIRG launched Student Debt Alert to ensure that decision makers nationally and locally make student loans more affordable.

August 2006:
1)   The US Department of Education released a report stating that "reduced student debt burden" should be one of the main goals of the financial aid system.

2) The Department held public hearings and comment periods throughout the process and over 2,000 students participated. The Department did not act by changing its rules; however, in

Spring 2007:
President's Bush's proposed budget called for cutting lender subsidies in order to increase student aid. We achieved a milestone in the effort in

September 2007:

The House and Senate, and then President Bush signed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act into law.  That Act created the new Income Based Repayment and Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs for federal student loan borrowers.
