Early Voting

The following states offer some form of early voting.

Early Voting: The voter completes the ballot in person at a county office or other designated polling site or ballot drop site prior to election day. (Also called in-person or on-site absentee voting.)

Alaska 15 days before election (Oct. 20). No restrictions.
Arizona Begins Oct. 2. No restrictions.
Arkansas Begins 15 days before election (Oct. 20). Held at the county clerk’s office or at designated location. No restrictions.
California Begins 29 days before election (Oct. 6). Held at count election’s office or designated location (check with your county). No restrictions.
Colorado Start dates and locations are by county. No restrictions.
District of Columbia Begins 15 days before (Oct. 20). Allowed only for those who will not be able to vote in-person on election day. Held at D.C. election’s office.
Florida Begins 15 days before (Oct. 20). Ends two days before (Nov. 2). Polling places designated by county. No restrictions.
Georgia Begins Sept. 22 at designated locations set by county. No restrictions.
Hawaii Begins Oct. 21. Ends Nov. 1. Locations designated by county. No restrictions.
Idaho Start dates and locations determined by county. No restrictions.
Illinois Begins Oct. 13. Ends Oct. 30. Location set by county. No restrictions.
Indiana Begins 28 days before election (Oct. 6) at county elections board office. No restrictions.
Iowa May cast absentee in-person vote at county auditors’ office prior to election. Offices are also open the two Saturdays before an election.
Kansas Begins Oct. 15 at county elections office. No restrictions.
Louisiana Begins Oct. 21. Ends Oct. 28 at Parish’s Registrar’s Office. Parishes may extend early voting dates. No restrictions.
Maine Begins 30 days before (Oct. 5) at municipal clerk’s office. No restrictions.
Minnesota Begins 30 days before (Oct. 5) in office of county auditor. Excuse is required.
Montana Begins 30 days before (Oct. 5) in election administrator’s office. No restrictions.
Nebraska Begins 35 days before (Sept. 30) in county clerk's office. No restrictions.
Nevada Begins on third Saturday before election (Oct. 18) to Friday before election day (Oct. 31) at county office. No restrictions.
New Mexico Begins on third Saturday before election (Oct. 18) at county clerk’s office. No restrictions.
North Carolina Begins on third Thursday before election (Oct. 16). Ends on Saturday before election (Nov. 1). Located at office of county board of elections or other designated place by county. No restrictions.
North Dakota Ballots available 40 days before election (Sept. 25). Counties have voting location available by county 15 days before (Oct. 20). No restrictions.
Ohio Begins 35 days before (Sept. 30) at designated polling places set by county. No restrictions.
Oklahoma In-person absentee ballot available at a location designated by the secretary of the county election board from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 31) and Monday (Nov. 3) immediately preceding any election and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 1) immediately preceding a state or federal election.
Oregon Oregon elections are all conducted by mail-in ballot
South Dakota Ballots available six-weeks before general election (Sept. 23). Must apply for ballot and may do so in-person at county clerk’s office and vote after application is approved.
Tennessee Begins 20 days before (Oct. 15). Ends five days before (Oct. 30). Located at county election commission’s office. No restrictions.
Texas Begins 17 days before each election unless the first day falls on the weekend, then early voting begins on the following Monday (Oct. 20). Ends four days before election (Oct. 31). Locations set by county. No restrictions.
Utah Begins 14 days before elections (Oct. 21) at office of election officer. No restrictions.
Vermont Begins 30 days before (Oct. 5) in town clerk’s office. No restrictions.
Virginia Begins 45 days before general election (Sept. 20), ends Saturday before election (Nov. 1) in voter registration office. Excuse is required.
West Virginia Begins 20 days before (Oct. 15). Ends three days before (Nov. 1). Located at county clerk’s office. No restrictions.
Wisconsin Ballots available three weeks before election (Oct. 14) at municipal clerk’s office. Ends the day before the election (Nov. 3). No restrictions.
Wyoming Begins 40 days before (Sept. 25) at county clerk’s office. No restrictions.
