Today Facebook settled a privacy complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC says Facebook "deceived consumers by telling them they could keep their information on Facebook private, and then repeatedly allowing it to be shared and made public." Read the FTC's full statement here.

You deserve to know if your information is safe and secure - and Facebook needs to ask before sharing your information with anyone. We've said this before, and the FTC agrees. For all of us who are tired of constantly changing and confusing settings, or were angered when Facebook shared your info without asking, this is a huge victory.

Talking Points Memo has outlined the charges against Facebook and says the settlement "tentatively requires Facebook to stop sharing user information with
advertisers," and calls out Facebook for privacy policies that are "unfair and deceptive."

As more and more of our personal information ends up online, from social networking, shopping, and
playing games, we need to make sure that our information is safe and secure.

We're continuing our work to ask the FTC to support consumer friendly policies that require companies to keep our information secure, protect
our information on computers and mobile devices, and requiring companies to ask for permission before collecting our data.
